To determine how best to help each student, we
develop specific instructional goals. This process
begins when our education director first sees the
student for an educational evaluation. If another
professional has recently administered an evaluation,
we use the findings of that evaluation and the results
of a brief assessment to design the student’s
educational goals. The director determines the student's
learning patterns and skill levels in several or
all of these areas:
Language
- sound awareness
- vocabulary
- grammar skill and sense of word order
- phrasing
- listening comprehension
- auditory and visual memory
Reading
- phonics
- sight word recognition
- reading with fluency and speed
- comprehension
Spelling
- spelling sight and phonetic words in isolation
- spelling words in sentences
- spelling during daily written work
Writing
- handwriting neatness and speed
- mechanical correctness
- syntax (phrasing)
- organization
- fluency
- topic development and clarity of expression
Mathematics
- math concepts
- math facts
- computations
- word problems and math reasoning
- fluency and accuracy
Organizational, study & time management
skills
- organization of school materials
- management of homework and study time
- reading fluency and comprehension
- note-taking
- regular review of material
- use of strategies most effective for different
assignments
- work efficiency
After the evaluation, the director meets with the
parents to discuss the results and the recommended
instructional program. If the student attends our
after-school tutorial program, the director or the
student's teacher at Manus Academy may also communicate with
the school staff to coordinate efforts of parents,
current school and Manus Academy . For qualified students in
need of specific school services or accommodations,
Manus Academy helps the parents and school staff develop and
monitor a 504 Accommodation Plan or an Individual
Educational Plan (IEP). |
