Home Study Support Program
During the first month of a student's instruction,
parents usually meet with their child's teacher
to discuss how they can facilitate educational progress
at home. The instructor, who develops this home
study program, shows parents how to:
- help their child practice good study habits
- effectively supervise their child's homework
and study sessions
- reinforce the remedial work the tutor
does with the child
- communicate effectively with school professionals
- manage the stress often associated with
handling their child's educational needs
Consultation with Other Professionals
Sometimes parents and children have needs that cannot
be met by educational training. To make progress,
the student may require medical treatment, counseling,
a more in-depth diagnosis, an outside support group,
or special services in the school. When this is
the case, the Manus Academy staff meets with the parents to
discuss appropriate recommendations and referrals.
If a child is already seeing another professional,
such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist
or occupational therapist, we communicate periodically
with that professional to discuss how we may best
support the student and his or her family.
Summer School Courses and Tutoring
Manus Academy offers accredited summer courses for high school
students who wish to earn credits for courses they
failed during the school year or who wish to take
particularly challenging courses in a tutorial setting.
Upon completion of course work, these credits are
transferred to the students' regular schools.
Students may take such courses as Spanish, algebra
I and II, geometry or English. Their summer programs
usually involve a combination of individual tutoring
followed by independent work, five days a week for
four or more weeks. Once we determine the specific
needs of each student, we schedule regular times
for attendance and cover the exact costs.
Because our school is fully accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools, most principals
at local public and private schools accept our course
credits as transfer credits; however, we ask that
parents get written confirmation of this credit
acceptance before enrolling their students in our
courses.
We also offer summer instruction for elementary,
middle and high school students in basic handwriting,
spelling, reading, written expression and math skills
and other skills, such as art, keyboarding and computers
and science investigations. The schedules for these
classes vary. |
