He is finally and truly getting the kind of instruction

Since working with his

Homework and Study Skills Coaching
For homework and study skills coaching to work, students must transfer what
they learn in tutoring to their school and home environments. To ensure this
transfer, we:
-
use students' school assignments and materials to train them to organize their
materials, plan their time well and use study strategies most effective for
each assignment
-
monitor students as they follow a regularly scheduled homework and study time
each day
-
train parents to use strategies that promote independent study habits in their
children
- communicate with each student's teachers
to determine how the student is currently
performing in class and the degree to which
he or she uses the teacher's prescribed homework
and study strategies
- participate, when necessary, in monitoring
a student's Individual Educational Plan or
504 Accommodation Plan so he or she performs
well in spite of learning or attention difficulties
-
provide course counseling and recommendations on school placement
Subject Tutoring
Sometimes, otherwise successful students need help in just one subject, such as
algebra, chemistry or Spanish. Manus Academy offers single-subject tutoring
during which the instructor teaches the course content and coaches the student
to use study strategies most effective for that course.
Ongoing Parent Consultation
Our teaching staff reviews each student's progress
with parents before or after lessons and during
regularly scheduled, fifteen-minute, bi-weekly
phone conferences or email communications. With
the parents' permission, they also contact the
student's teachers at school.
These frequent communications allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of the
tutorial program, the school accommodations and the child's use of his or her
homework and study time. The instructional program is regularly assessed and
updated as needed.
Every spring, Manus Academy re-evaluates each student's educational skills,
either formally or informally, depending on which is most appropriate.
Following this assessment, the instructor meets with the parents and, together,
they discuss future educational plans for the student. |
